Is a Compressor Too Hot to Touch a Problem?

Short answer

Hot is normal; these signs are not
A compressor (the motor-driven pump that drives the refrigerant) is hot while it works. The condenser (the coil behind the grille) and its fan are there to carry that heat out of the machine. Keep your hands out of the compartment: Sub-Zero’s owner’s guide has the power off at the breaker and gloves on before anyone works at the condenser.
What you can notice from outside:
- runs that end in a click, with the compressor restarting minutes later;
- air from the grille far hotter than it usually is;
- the compressor humming while the fan beside it stays still;
- a hot or scorched smell near the grille.
Why it runs too hot
- Poor airflow. Dust packed into the condenser, a stopped condenser fan, or trim and stored things blocking the grille keep the heat in. HVAC School names dirty condenser coils and weak condenser airflow among what drives a compressor’s discharge temperature up.
- A hot room. Sub-Zero’s service manual says its units perform best between 60°F and 90°F.
- A low charge. Refrigerant returning through the compressor helps cool it. With less refrigerant flowing, it runs hotter.
- A laboured start. A motor stalled while it tries to start heats very fast.
What gets checked
The condenser and its fan first, then the current the compressor draws, then the pressures. A condenser fan motor is not a sealed-system part, so it is priced in the fan band.

Can I cool the compressor down with a room fan?
A fan aimed at the grille may ease things for an afternoon, but it cures neither a clogged coil nor a stopped condenser fan. Clear anything stacked in front of the grille with the power off, then have the cause found by Sub-Zero Repair Edmonds: (206) 210-3547.
Will an overheating compressor damage itself?
It is protected up to a point: the overload protector switches it off when it gets too hot and lets it restart once it cools.
